Origin
Tucked into the foothills of Sonoma Mountain on the western side of Sonoma Valley, Stone Edge Farm is protected from the ravishments of Pacific winds that cool the vineyards in nearby Carneros. Stone Edge Farm’s vines were planted in 1996 and are deeply rooted in an ancient riverbed of alluvial stones washed down from Sonoma Mountain. The well-draining rocky soil encourages the vines to shift early in the growing season from the vegetative growth of leaves to fruit and tannin ripening, ultimately resulting in a polished, voluptuous wine.
Pairings
With tannins that are sweet and fine, this wine has a polish and grace that make it a natural match for soft, elegant preparations such as a roast or a braise. However, the endless and exuberant berry fruit will also taste wonderful with the char on a well-seared steak from the grill.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Decant for one hour before serving.
Winemaker
With all the praise accorded to Napa, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the Sonoma Valley, with its similar soils and exposures, often produces Cabernets equally as lush, deep and alluring. Founded by the wine industry veteran Mac Mc- Quown and his wife Leslie, Stone Edge Farm was conceived as a holistic vision, bringing wine, food, gardens and wild space together in an organic way. Winemaker Jeff Baker, formerly of the legendary Mayacamas and Carmenet vineyards, works with the excellent fruit provided by Phil Coturri, a prominent organic viticulturist and “grape guru” who is known for coaxing superlative fruit from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.
The Wine
The 2008 Surround is a blend of various lots from Stone Edge Farm’s estate vineyards, as well as a few surrounding vineyards, all farmed under the organic regime of Phil Coturri. 2008 was a good growing season, with cool weather producing intense, dark wines like this one. Classic Cabernet Sauvignon notes of red and black currants carry the wine, which is accented by notes of spice, vanilla and cedar. Tannins are finely wrought and dense, carrying the finish deep to the back of the throat.
