Origin
This cherry-inflected red comes from hilly country northeast of Naples, where a mix of soils yields particularly structured, ageworthy wines. Here, the chief red grape is Aglianico, an ancient indigenous variety that likely came from the Greeks. It is considered one of southern Italy’s greatest grapes, along with Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Aglianico makes full-bodied wines with firm tannins and high acidity. These characteristics give Aglianico its extraordinary aging potential; it is a wine that benefits from spending time in both barrel and bottle to soften its powerful structure.
Pairings
Because of its age, the 2002 Taurasi is more elegantly cut than some of its more muscular peers, but it nevertheless requires a dish with substantial protein and intensity to counterbalance its full flavors and soft but evident tannins. The wine’s earthiness suggests lamb or game as an ideal partner, but simple steaks make a terrific match, too. Thanks to its acidity, the wine pairs well with tomatobased dishes: pour it alongside Italianstyle braises and stews that combine meat with tomatoes, such as osso buco or a meaty lasagna.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
Vinosia is a relatively new winery founded by brothers Mario and Luciano Ercolino; their family started one of Campania’s most cultish wineries, Feudi di San Gregorio, where Mario served as head winemaker. In 2003, the two set out to make their own wines, creating Vinosia, which means “a new place of wine.” Mario manages winemaking with the same drive toward excellence that he exhibited at Feudi, where his big, rich style helped bring the wines of southern Italy to international prominence. Luciano handles marketing and distribution, as the two strive to create a successful brand based on relatively unknown cultivars and terroir that happen to produce extraordinary wines.
The Wine
For the durable, long-aging wines of Taurasi, nine years in bottle is not such a long time. But it’s proven long enough to round the edges of this wine and soften its once-stiff tannins. Give it a swirl to release herb-tinged notes of thyme and violet, mingling with blackberry and blueberry aromas. Flavors of ripe red cherries and raspberries come into play, backed by a hint of rose petal. Balance is achieved by setting luscious fruit against lively acidity and polished tannins. Elegant, well-crafted and wonderfully drinkable, the Vinosia is an unusually sophisticated rendition of an often rustic grape.
