Origin
South Africa boasts some of the world's most picturesque wine country. The maritime influences of both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans--as well as the Benguela current, which pulls up cool air from Antarctica--result in lower mean temperatures than in other wine regions of similar latitude. And the vines, most of which are within a 100-mile radius of Cape Town, thrive in the nearly perfect Mediterranean climate.
Pairings
While surprisingly versatile, this bright and lively Cabernet Sauvignon fares best with simply prepared red meats. A grilled rib eye or T-bone steak, seasoned with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, is an ideal accompaniment. The rich protein will soften the tannins, flatter the fruit and coax more complex flavors out of the wine.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
First established in 1771, what is now the Warwick Estate was part of the much larger property known as a "Farm of Good Success." Following the Second Anglo-Boer War, the commanding officer of the Warwickshire regiment bought the property in 1902 and renamed it Warwick in tribute to the men who served under his command. Some 60 years later, Stan Ratcliffe purchased the estate and planted the first vines in 1971. As it turned out, his new bride, Norma, had quite a knack for winemaking, and in 1974 Warwick marketed its first commercial release. Norma served as head winemaker for 20 years and is still actively involved in every aspect of the business.
The Wine
The name honors winemaker and co-founder Norma Ratcliffe, who is affectionately known as "The First Lady of Warwick." Comprised of 97 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 percent Petit Verdot, the 2008 vintage was fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in neutral oak barrels for 15 months. Notes of cedar and dried herbs complement vibrant aromas and flavors of huckleberry, black raspberry, crème de cassis and fresh herbs. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, supple and elegantly styled. Warwick's First Lady is ready to enjoy now, but it will also continue to improve for years to come.
