Origin
Italy’s Puglia region stretches along the heel of the so-called “boot.” Its near-perfect Mediterranean climate and fertile plains make it one of Italy’s most prolific wine-producing regions, but until recently most of its products were held in low esteem and used for blending or for making Vermouth. However, thanks to the determination of a handful of local producers, the 1990s ushered in an era of radical transformation and new promise. Now Puglia produces what are arguably some of Italy’s most distinctive wines.
Pairings
The Zicari Diago pairs well with a wide array red meat dishes, particularly those that are grilled, smoked or braised. Its plump, forward fruit stands up to heavy spices and chili heat better than most red wines, while simultaneously offering welcome contrast to saltier preparations. It also loves fruitbased sauces, especially those made from berries or plums. Serving dark fruit chutneys and compotes alongside the meat of choice can help to build a strong bridge between the food and the wine’s sweet, plump fruit flavors.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The Zicari family has farmed its estate in the Manduria sub-region since the 18th century, though the property’s winemaking history dates back to the 1100s, when Cistercian monks from Burgundy settled there. Passed down from generation to generation since the 1800s, the estate is now in the care of the talented and charming mother-and-daughter team of Ines Zicari and Anna Salinari. Just inland from the Ionian Sea, the winery has more than 60 acres under cultivation, much of which is planted to the indigenous grape Negroamaro, which many consider, along with Primitivo, to be one of the region’s most important and distinctive grape varieties.
The Wine
Zicari’s Diago bottling gets its name from a local legend about a wealthy property owner who, not having any children, willed his considerable holdings to the farmers who worked the land. Over the years, Diago became synonomous with generosity. Aptly named and having never seen oak, this 100 percent Negroamaro is bright and lush with mouthfilling fruit. Vibrant aromas of boysenberry, lightly baked plum, spiced raisins and chocolate-covered orange wedges burst from the glass. Plump, juicy flavors of olallieberry, black cherry jam, dark plum and super-ripe watermelon glide onto the palate, bringing to mind a summer stampede through the fruit section of a farmers’ market.
