First planted in 1973, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard produces some of California's most stylish Chardonnay from mature, low-yielding vines that deliver lavishly textured, exotic and complex wines. At elevations of 300 to 500 feet, the vineyard has gravelly loam and sandy soils and slopes to the east. This region is exposed to dramatic temperature shifts because of hot inland daytime temperatures and cold afternoon winds that flow in from Monterey Bay.
Full-bodied, complex Chardonnays like this one do require food of some weight and richness to match their intensity. Chicken, lobster and corn are often complementary.
Rob and Diana Jensen left their high-tech careers behind to found the Chardonnay and Pinot Noirdriven Testarossa Winery in Los Gatos, Calif., one hour south of San Francisco, in the heart of Silicon Valley. They purchase fruit mainly from standout vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey County, but also source some fruit from Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties.
Few Chardonnays are as exotic or layered as this one. It has ripe stone fruit, smoke, citrus, filbert nut, vanilla, coconut and lime zest aromas with rich tropical fruit, apricot, lemon curd and candied pineapple flavors that finish with a bit of minerality and toasty oak notes.
