Tuscany is best known for its fine Brunello and Chianti wines made from the indigenous Sangiovese grape. Since the late 1960s many top wineries have also been crafting so-called "SuperTuscan" wines from international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Tolaini's estate is located within the Castelnuovo Berardegna region of Chianti Classico, in the heart of Tuscany, where hillside clay and limestone soils produce fragrant and powerful wines.
Enjoy this sturdy Cabernet blend with smoky grilled meat like lamb rib chops or steak, or slow-cooked meat dishes served with aromatic spices like coriander and cumin.
At age 19, Pierluigi Tolaini emigrated from Tuscany to the oilfields of western Canada. At 25, he purchased a freight truck and began building the major North American logistics firm TransX. 45 years later, having made his fortune, he returned to Tuscany and bought two vineyards in the Castelnuovo Berardenga zone of Chianti Classico, built a winery from the ground up and hired superstar oenologist Michel Rolland to make his wines.
Valdisanti offers a distinctly Tuscan take on the traditional Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It has aromas of Indian incense, coffee, red currant, plum, rosemary and walnuts and concentrated blueberry, plum, espresso and bittersweet chocolate flavors. This is a tight, young wine that will benefit from decanting or cellaring.
