Origin
Mendoza, 750 miles northwest of Buenos Aires and 125 miles northeast of Santiago, Chile, is the largest wine-making area in Argentina, accounting for 70 percent of its total wine production. Interestingly, it is also one of the driest places on earth. With peaks as high as nearly 23,000 feet, the Andes reach up to capture all precipitation moving east from the Pacific, holding it in the form of snow and ice. Its gradual melting transforms this high desert landscape into one of the world's most prolific wine regions.
Pairings
Richly-textured stews, thick cuts of beef and gamy meats are all natural accompaniments for Malbec. Pork ribs and chops also work well, especially with softer, fruit-driven offerings like the Tomero. Malbec contradicts the rule that powerful wines should not be served with boldly flavored cheeses--it even works surprisingly well with blue-veined powerhouses like Cambazola, Gorganzola and Roquefort. But, whether you decide to grill a steak, bake a meatloaf, roast a prime rib, or cut a creamy wedge of blue cheese, the dish will find a loyal, easy-going companion in Malbec.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
The name "Tomero" honors the "water suppliers" who to this day control the flow of Andean snowmelt that irrigates the vineyard lands in Mendoza and throughout Argentina, without which viticulture would be impossible. Tomero is one of several labels from Bodega Carlos Pulenta's portfolio. Named after its visionary and founder, the state-of-the-art winery, completed in 2005, is a tribute to what can be accomplished when money is no object. And the resulting wines are succulent examples of their respective varietals and astonishing value for the price point.
The Wine
The Valle de Uco, a sub-region of Lujan de Cuyo, is located in the northeastern corner of Argentina's Mendoza region. These high-altitude vineyards benefit from deep, mineral-rich soils; warm, sunny days; and cool nights. A proud byproduct of these ideal growing conditions, Tomero's 2009 offering--made from 100 percent Malbec--displays aromas of black plum, red currant, black cherry, mocha and black licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, it has a plush texture, along with flavors of spiced plum, mulberry, cedar and milk chocolate, which are supported by ripe tannins. All of the grapes were hand-harvested from old vines, most of which were planted in the late 1940s.
