This zesty white hails from the Rueda Denomination of Origin in the Castile and Léon region of central Spain, an area crossed by the Duero River and several of its tributaries. The stony alluvial soils of Rueda produce some of Spain's most dazzling white wines. A number of varieties are grown in the region, but the star is the late-ripening Verdejo, which is particularly well-suited to Rueda's arid, sun-drenched summers.
This wine comes from Spain's carnivorous heartland, but is ideally suited to seafood, from fresh shellfish to grilled bass or halibut. It's also delicious as an aperitif wine with a bit of Manchego and jamón Ibérico.
Valsanzo's stated mission is to make outstanding wines from Spain's most outstanding winegrowing regions. In addition to this white wine from Rueda, Valsanzo also makes wines from Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Toro and Bierzo. All of the wines are made by Javier Rodríguez, in collaboration with technicians FROM participating bodegas in each zone. Rodríguez makes contemporary wines that are fresh, concentrated and fruit-driven. This white is fermented in stainless steel, and is not aged in oak.
This Verdejo opens with zingy lime blossom, clover, fennel and green apple aromas. It has zesty citrus, white peach, tangerine and kiwi flavors, finishing with jasmine, mineral and almond notes and mouthwatering acidity.
