Origin
The Marche (pronounced Mar-kay) is a spectacularly beautiful region on central Italy’s east coast. Stretching along the Adriatic Sea, it is bordered by Abruzzo to the south, Umbria and Tuscany to the west, and EmiliaRomagna to the north. Most of its vineyards are planted in the steep terrain of the Apennine Range before it drops abruptly to the flat, sandy coastline. Lacrima di Morro is a red grape variety indigenous to the hills around the town of Morro d’Alba in Marche’s Ancona province.
Pairings
This fresh, exuberant wine has enough heft to pair with lean, simply prepared beef dishes or with pastas with red meat sauces, but is best suited to pork and poultry. Its medium body and bright acidity also makes it light enough to serve with fish, especially when herbs and spices are incorporated. Distinctive and bright, it is a delightful stand-alone libation, before or after a meal. Also look for culinary inspiration from local foods from the Marche region. Consider Pecorino and Casciotta cheeses, brodetto (fish stew), vincisgrassi (a local interpretation of lasagna), or porchetta (suckling pig stuffed with fennel and garlic).

Serve at room temperature (66°F).
Winemaker
Young entrepreneurs Angela and Ercole Velenosi established the Velenosi Estate in 1984. Over the past 27 years, their passion and dedication have allowed them to incrementally improve their vineyard practices and winemaking techniques. This, coupled with the keen business instincts of their new partner, Paolo Garbini, and the winemaking prowess of Attilio Pagli, ensures that Velenosi consistently produces many of the region’s most outstanding wines.
The Wine
According to the most widely accepted explanation, the grape is called Lacrima, which means “tear” in Italian, because juice seeps from its berries as they reach full maturity. Once on the verge of extinction, the varietal has made a dramatic comeback since the wine was granted DOC status in 1985. The blue-tinged magenta color of Velenosi’s 2009 offering is a harbinger of the effusive floral aromatics: violet, rose and lavender blossom. Look for plump, juicy flavors reminiscent of blueberry pie, as well as cinnamon and clove on the palate.
