Origin
Ribera del Guadiana lies within the southwestern Spanish region of Extremadura. Loosely translated, "Extremadura" means as far from the Duero River as possible--a reference to the no-man's land that was often left scorched in the wake of battles between the Spanish and the Moors. This fertile land is the source of Spain's famed Serrano ham made from acorn-fed, freerange black pigs, or "pata negra." Extremadura also produces excellent lamb, olive oil and wine. It is often said of Extremadura, "If it grows in Spain, it grows here."
Pairings
Serve this Spanish Tempranillo with hearty fare, like grilled lamb shoulder chops marinated in red wine and bay leaves, Manchego cheese and Serrano ham grilled cheese sandwiches, or Moroccan-spiced lamb kebabs with a mint-cucumber sauce.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Descended from a long line of Spanish landowners, álvaro de Alvear sought new opportunity in the Ribera del Guadiano. With the help of oenologist Yolanda Piñero, he selected a spectacular site at the foot of the Lamoneda Mountains and planted 32 distinct parcels, each distinguished by soil type and exposure. In addition to the classic Spanish grape Tempranillo, the estate grows several international varieties, including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
The Wine
The grapes for this wine were handpicked and sorted. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 14 months in French oak casks and then another year in bottle. It has aromas of fresh tobacco, spiced plum, dried cherry and black currant, and flavors of cherry, currant, leather and licorice, with a supple finish.
