Origin
Somontano is situated on a high elevation plateau at the base of the Pyrenees in northern Spain. It's a picturesque region famous for its ski resorts, medieval towns and many monasteries. Wine production has seen a great resurgence in recent years, with sites replanted or rehabilitated to satisfy a new demand for quality wine at home and abroad. The climate is continental, with snowy winters and sweltering summers suitable for growing Tempranillo and varieties like Syrah and Garnacha that can take the heat.
Pairings
Try this sturdy Garnacha with grilled quail, roasted whole chicken rubbed with cumin and coriander or grilled sardines or mackerel.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
Viñas del Vero takes its name from the Vero River that flows through the canyons and ravines of the Somontano district. The company was set up at the end of 1986 to acquire 1,500 acres of land near the town of Barbastro. Later the group also purchased the neglected old-vine red and white Garnacha vineyard in the Secastilla Valley, northeast of Somontano. It is this craggy but refreshed vineyard that now produces La Miranda. Today, Viñas del Vero is the largest and one of the best respected wine producers in Somontano.
The Wine
This old-vine Garnacha has spiced plum, cola, black cherry, pepper and vanilla aromas and rich, brambly berry fruit with notes of plum, red and black pepper, graphite, earth and cinnamon.
