South Africa is widely considered to be the most naturally beautiful wine-growing environment in the world. This wine comes from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, just east of Capetown on the southern coast, where the climate is just slightly warmer than that of Bordeaux. Grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon develop full flavors here, in the decomposed granite soils at the base of the inland mountain ranges of Simonsberg as well as Paarl, just to the north.
A bit less structured than Bordeaux and a touch earthier than a California Cabernet, this wine is a nice match for flavorful, aromatic dishes with rich, nutty flavors like lamb rib chops marinated in red wine and bay leaves or chicken molé enchiladas.
Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye established Vrede en Lust, which means “Peace and Eagerness,” in the 17th century. The estate has changed hands several times, and since 1996 has been owned by the Buys family, who have committed themselves to making it one of the premier wine estates of South Africa. The wines are made by Susan Erasmus, who describes her first vintage of Boet Erasmus as a wine with expressive fruit, clean lines and good complexity.
Boet Erasmus is this estate’s flagship wine. This Bordeaux-style blend has dark chocolate, licorice, plum, date, coal and Madras curry aromas and ripe boysenberry, rhubarb pie, black cherry, cola and bay laurel flavors that are rich but nimble and moderately tannic.
