St. Laurent is a grape variety that's seldom seen in the United States but is relatively common in Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany. It is said to be a relative of Pinot Noir and was imported to Germany from France in the mid-19th century by pharmacist and winegrower Johann Philipp Bronner. Also called Laurenzitraube, St. Laurent makes aromatic, complex, medium-bodied red wines for a welcome change of pace. This wine shows that the chalky soils of the Rheinhessen can deliver more than just great Riesling.
Treat this wine as you might a slightly fruitier, denser Pinot Noir. It will go well with roast or grilled pork dishes with a fruit compote; dishes seasoned with cinnamon, cumin or coriander; tuna steaks or grilled salmon.
Becker-Landgraf is the husband and wife team of Johannes Landgraf, whose ancestors have made wine since the 18th century, and Julia Becker Landgraf, whose family's history in wine goes back even farther. The company is based at Becker's family winery, while Johannes Landgraf's brother continues to operate the Landgraf family estate. In addition to this wine, named for the couple's son, Luca, they also produce Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and, of course, Riesling. The vineyards are farmed sustainably.
This aromatic red has a nose of cherry, spice, cranberry and pine needles, and cherry liqueur, plum, cinnamon, milk chocolate and loam flavors with nimble acidity and a soft finish.
