Origin
Many consider the Kellerberg Vineyard to be one of the very finest parcels of the Wachau. Planted on steeply terraced vineyards of loess and gneiss soils, consisting of 90 percent feldspar and quartz, the southeasterly facing slope overlooks a side-valley of the Danube River. The site receives ample morning sun and is cooled in the evenings by breezes from the nearby woods. Wines from this vineyard are generally powerful but elegant.
Pairings
Grüner Veltliner's crisp acidity helps it cut through creamy sauces, as well as the richness of a smoked sturgeon rillette. It would also be a good match for salmon tartare with crème fraîche or steamed halibut with a creamy leek sauce.

Serve well chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
Weingut Gschweicher is the small estate of Herta and Gerhard Gschweicher. Their home vineyard is in the town of Röschitz, but they cull grapes from several superb vineyards, including Kellerberg, to make their highly acclaimed wines, focusing their efforts on Grüner Veltliner. Gerhard manages the cellar and teaches agriculture at the university in Hollabrunn, while Herta manages the business and oversees the organic vineyards. In recent years, their three children have also become involved in various aspects of the family business.
The Wine
Minerally, dry Austrian Grüner Veltliner has been winning over many American sommeliers because of its subtlety and food-friendly elegance. This fine example from Kellerberg has pretty mandarin orange zest, lime, apricot and white pepper aromas, a creamy texture and perky, ruby-red grapefruit and white peach flavors through the finish.
