ORIGIN PAIRINGS

Alto Adige is the northernmost wine region in Italy, nestled into the Alpine foothills of south Tirol, just south of Austria. In fact, German is the principal language of the region, and the terrain (and cheeses) seem as much Swiss as they are Italian. This region produces primarily white wine: Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc—all fresh, minerally and often quite profound.

The clean, crystalline flavors of Sauvignon Blanc pair quite nicely with seafood like crab or shellfish, especially when citrus or herb flavors come into play. Wines from this region are also an ideal match for cheeses made from the milk of cows that graze on the herbs and grasses of the Alps.

Serve well chilled (47°F).

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Kellerei Cantine Terlan is a cooperative of over 100 growers who farm vineyards at the foot of Mt. Tschöggel in Alto Adige. The association dates back to 1893. The growers of Terlan use sustainable growing methods, and once the grapes reach their shared stateof- the-art winemaking facility in Bolzano, veteran winemaker Rudi Kofler takes over.

The grapes for the Winkl come from a single elevated vineyard with sandy gravel soils. The wine is white-gold with green flecks. It has vibrant aromas of fresh tarragon, lemon zest, white peach and limestone with mid-palate flavors of pineapple, grapefruit and minerals, and subtle herb nuances on the finish.
