The northern Spanish wine region of Rioja is best known for its tremendous Tempranillo. Graciano (along with Garnacha) often plays a minor role in wines from this area. But more and more, adventurous producers are coaxing exceptional quality out of Graciano vineyards planted on quality sites in Rioja Baja, the hottest part of the region. At its best, the grape makes wines with excellent color and great aging potential.

Match this red with a medium-weight dish that will complement its youthful fruit and solid structure. A grilled or braised pork chop with ample spices is a good option, as is duck with a port wine reduction.

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Vinos Sin Ley, which translates to “wines without law,” is a cooperative effort by a number of young, rising-star winemakers from several regions of Spain. Their shared goal is to create “new” wines that are value-oriented, unconventional and, for the most part, fruit-driven. The winemakers meet twice a year to plan new projects of mutual interest. This wine is the brainchild of winemaker David Sampedro, who also makes wines for the Cortijo and Calma brands.

This deep, aromatic red has dark blackberry, boysenberry, cinnamon, lavender and smoke aromas with a slight tarry edge, high-toned violet notes, and flavors of ripe blackberry, plum, cherry, cola, clove and anise. It’s brimming with bright, dark fruit.
