When it comes to American Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley is still king of the hill, consistently producing deep black-fruited wines with polished tannins. Robert Craig’s Mt. George Cuvee comes from the same vineyard that produces its flagship Affinity Cabernet, just south of the Stag’s Leap District in the Mt. George foothills.

It’s hard to top a charcoal-grilled steak with a Napa Cabernet blend like this one. For another great match, try lamb loin chops marinated in red wine and bay leaves, then grilled. The typical minty notes of this Napa red pair very well with fresh herbs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Robert Craig worked for The Hess Collection atop Napa Valley’s Mt. Veeder throughout the 1980s and played an important role in securing Napa’s mountain districts recognition as distinct viticultural areas. He established his own winery on Howell Mountain in 1992 with help from three longtime friends and produced his first Robert Craig Cabernet in 1995.

This easy-drinking, deep, juicy red has the classic character of ripe Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with generous blackberry, juniper, bay leaf and graphite aromas, and mouth-filling blueberry, black currant, sage and mint flavors that finish soft and long.
