Langhorne Creek is a small wine region inland and southeast of Adelaide in South Australia, which is sometimes characterized as a “cool desert.” It generally sees warm, sunny days, with hot temperatures relieved in the late afternoon by the “Lake Doctor,” a cool breeze that flows in over Lake Alexandrina from the Great Southern Ocean.

Lamb is plentiful in Australia, and it pairs terrifically well with Aussie Shiraz. Grilled rib chops and roast leg of lamb are both good matches for this red.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Award-winning winemaker Ben Riggs has been making wine for 22 years, including a long stint at Wirra Wirra winery in nearby McLaren Vale. He is a native of South Australia and a graduate of Roseworthy, the Aussie winemaking-school equivalent of U.C. Davis. He works closely with vineyard manager John Pargeter to assure the best raw materials for this wine.

Co-fermenting a small amount of the white grape Viognier with Shiraz is an old trick that originated in the Northern Rhône Valley, where vignerons discovered the technique helped to “fix” the wine’s color to deliver a nice purple hue and add exotic floral aromas. This fruitdriven red has bay leaf, boysenberry and espresso aromas and rich blackberry, raspberry and eucalyptus flavors.
