The story of Oregon wine began in the Dundee Hills 40 years ago when David Lett and a couple of other aspiring winemakers planted Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in the Willamette Valley, believing that the climate there would allow those varieties to just barely ripen in good years—a condition that tends to produce superior grapes. Critical validation soon followed, and today Oregon’s Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wines are among the finest in the world.

Pinot Gris is a very versatile food and pairs well with wine. It’s terrific with crab, lobster or Thanksgiving turkey, and also matches well with savory vegetarian dishes like butternut squash risotto.

Serve chilled (47°F).

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Steve and Paula Black bought their 110-acre vineyard in 2003 and decided to call their new winery The Four Graces in tribute to their four daughters. With the help of talented consulting winemaker Laurent Monthalieu (formerly of WillaKenzie), the Blacks produce several bottlings of Pinot Noir, a bit of Pinot Blanc and this exceptional Pinot Gris, which is made from fruit grown exclusively on their family estate.

The Alsatian-clone Pinot Gris vines that produce the fruit for this wine were planted in 1993 in an elevated section of the estate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, then aged on the lees for added complexity. It has aromas of sweet white flowers, anise, honeydew melon and white peach, and bold melon, pineapple and Rainier cherry flavors and a mineral finish.
