Just over the Mayacamas range to the west of Napa Valley is Alexander Valley, best known for producing excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The warm, dry weather, ample sun and rocky hillsides of Alexander Valley also offer outstanding growing conditions for Rhône varieties like Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. This Rhône blend comes from the biodynamically farmed, family-owned Unti Vineyard.

Enjoy this spicy red with any sort of grilled or smoked red meat, hearty stews, and sweet or tart-and-savory foods like pulled-pork sandwiches, beef ribs, or even sweet and sour chicken.

WINEMAKER THE WINE

Horse & Plow was founded by Vinum Cellars winemaker Chris Condos, who was looking to start a label that would only make wine from organically and biodynamically grown grapes. He uses traditional European methods and aims for elegance and balance in lieu of ultra-ripeness and excessive new oak. Chris’s wife, Suzanne Hagins, oversees sales and marketing for Horse & Plow and is also a winemaker by training.

The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented together in small open-top fermentors and matured in French barrels, only 15 percent of them new. The wine is unfined and unfiltered, so it may throw a bit of sediment. It has bright wild strawberry, hibiscus, rose petal, pepper, menthol, licorice and vanilla aromas and flavors of plum, cinnamon-spiced cranberries, dried cherry and black pepper.
