Puglia is a very fertile region in southeastern Italy that borders the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas and the Strait of Otranto and the Gulf of Taranto. The southern portion of Puglia forms the high heel on the “boot” of Italy. Known primarily for rustic red wine, the region is enjoying a renaissance in quality, largely inspired by investment in modern facilities and practices from established wineries in northern Italy and abroad. The signature red grape of Puglia is Primitivo, a close cousin of California’s Zinfandel grape. The Patruale’s dry tannins make it a good match for pasta and pizza, but it will also stand up to grilled meats, including sweet-spicy fare such as barbecue and ribs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).

WINEMAKER THE WINE
The Zicari family has farmed its estate in the Manduria region of the Taranto province since the 18th century, though the property’s winemaking history dates back to the 12th century, when Burgundian Cistercian monks settled there. Today, Donna Ines Zicari and her daughter Anna carry on the family legacy and have made considerable progress towards establishing a reputation for Tenuta Zicari beyond Italy’s borders. Aged without oak in stainless steel for eight months, the Patruale delivers the impressive credentials of the Primitivo grape. On the nose, aromas of black fruit, vanilla and red grapefruit are joined by hints of blood orange and mocha. The wine is full-bodied and will wake up the palate with red fruit flavors of cranberry and cherry with nuances of spice and mushroom.
