Origin
South Australia's McLaren Vale is a narrow strip of land wedged between the heights of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges and the temperate waters of the Gulf of Saint Vincent. Its Mediterranean-like climate, undulating topography and diverse soil types allow the region's ambitious winemakers to produces a remarkable array of wines ranging from crisp, mineral-laced Riesling to profound Shiraz, and everything in between. In terms of elegance, complexity and value, McLaren Vale wines are among the world's best.
Pairings
Combining Shiraz with Grenache creates a balance and synergy that complements food beautifully. Shiraz contributes body, color, structure and grip, while Grenache's gregarious and blousy nature adds plushness and complements the peppery notes found in Shiraz. This deftly crafted blend has enough charm and richness to stand alone, but it pairs beautifully with lighter meat dishes such as veal, chicken and pork. Play off the wine's implicit peppery quality by incorporating herbs and spices into marinades, sauces and accompanying side dishes.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
In 1912, Joseph Osborn, then director of the Thomas Hardy winery, purchased a 60-acre vineyard in the hills just north of the McLaren Vale township. Joseph's son Frank expanded the family business until Frank's son Francis d'Arrenberg Osborn, affectionately known as "d'Arry," took over. Now the winery rests securely is in the very capable hands of d'Arry's son Chester. Since taking the reigns in 1983, Chester has received considerable acclaim for his efforts, including being recognized by Robert Parker as one of the Top 40 Wine Personalities in the world.
The Wine
First launched in 1959 as "d'Arrenberg Burgundy," the name and label were changed in 1992 to honor the winery's founder, Francis d'Arenberg Osborn, known the world over as "d'Arry." Crafted from low-yielding vines planted in the 1890s, the 2008 vintage combines the depth and structure of Shiraz (67 percent) with the succulent, sweet fruit of Grenache (33 percent). The high-toned nose offers vibrant aromas of black plum, raspberry, lavender and baking spices. On the palate, the satisfying combination of fruit, green herbs, earth and spice offers seamless integration of flavors and a persistent, lively tone.
